wzrdryAV - Pacific Greyscale
With the release of wzrdryAV’s Pacific Greyscale, another piece of the Transmolecular Compendium takes shape and is revealed. Vancouver’s Kelly Nairn is another integral player in this collection of artists (his collaborative efforts with SEEKERSINTERNATIONAL cannot be missed) and musicians and these 40 minutes are an impeccably crafted journey through the sites and emotions of his home on the Pacific Canadian coast. Electronic daydreams search through deep rhythmic drifts and chilled salt waves. Nairn’s sounds are looped over and over until they swaddle you like a soft, warm quilt. On the surface, this is relaxing music but there’s a hint of paranoia and general strangeness mixed in that keeps proceedings from finding too much bliss. Pacific Greyscale will take you somewhere for sure, but each listen reveals new destinations.

——- As a child of the 1980s, Vancouver-born producer Kelly Claude Nairn (WzrdryAV) was hypnotized by the results of New York City resourcefulness: raw, sparse, drum machine hip-hop and later, the eclectic sample-based rap of the 1990s. Raised by a new age mom and jazz freak artist dad, pillaging the family record cabinet for inspiration was a natural progression. Two turntables, mixer, and a sampler later, Kelly was soon making deft left-field instrumentals. Concurrent w/ electro-acoustic study under granular synthesis pioneer Barry Truax at Simon Fraser University, field recordings, audio collage, sound object manipulation, and slightly unhinged ambient works were added to his expanding cache. Foundation and technique in place, by the new millennium, the beat maker was putting a revelatory breakthrough into practice, “sample anything.” From big screen cinema and late night VHS sessions to TV sign off music and nature sounds, nothing was off limits. This not only led to the creation of WZRDRY (Kelly’s imprint and artistic umbrella), but a range of productions released internationally on vinyl, cassette tape, and compact disc.   Today, Kelly combines his academic background w/ a personal self-taught approach, equally informed by British Columbia’s street meets tree topped mountains and oceanic reflections. Utilizing analog and digital equipment, new tracks aim to create a place/atmosphere/mood via magnetic programming and universal rhythms. While deliberate melodies are uncommon, repeating fragments of tones/chords and foggy loops/drones manifest themselves in the most unexpected ways. “I’m putting together and playing back sounds for the audience that I find evocative for my own escapism,” states the producer, encouraging listeners to join the trip and interpret, as they will. The music of WzrdryAV goes beyond the increasingly fast-paced cultural landscape, gradually slowing the pace and returning some long forgotten feeling to auditory expression. Touching on the influence of Jamaican dub and Detroit techno in his oeuvre, “It’s about facing limitations by looking within to work in different ways and develop one’s creativity.” Here’s to the future… Listen, live, and learn!

Hashbrown The Walk On
GUILDFORD, Surrey The Walk On As the Summer sun rinses over the town of Guildford, an unimposing shadow is cast across the morning pavement. Stand still with heavy lided eyes towards the horizon, Hashbrown is home. It is here where he spent hours absorbing and internalizing seminal works of the past and near present, frantically scouring radio frequencies in search of ’anything’, and clumsily dissecting records only to reassemble them as (what he deems) ‘paraphrased songs’. More importantly, it is here where the young producer heard an inner voice calling him to action and he responded with The Walk On. This is where Hashbrown’s story begins. Initially archived on the private label Outerbound Recordings and circulated amongst immediate family and likeminded artists, The Walk On is now being presented to listeners (close to half a decade later) in its raw and unadulterated form. Consisting of 33 snippet-like tracks, assembled by a then-16 year old Hashbrown, The Walk On documents the meek and humble beginnings of the producer’s foray into recorded material. Presented in a simple beat tape format, The Walk On is a personal ode to all sources that have fueled the young producer’s inner call to action. From specific people, places, sounds, and crystallized moments/memories, it is this sense of intimate history that resonates throughout his works. Equipped with a secondhand sampler and the meager offerings of a new jack’s crate, Hashbrown attempts to translate his sources of inspiration into brief musical tributes/dedications. From the declaratory promise of commitment (never gonna stay) to the jubilant rejoicing of life (song of yesterday); from dust-drenched moments of clarity (drawnblank) to the foreboding stride of repentance (BNC), each track conveys the emotional candidness and honesty that constitutes the very essence of The Walk On. Minimalistic and concise in nature, each track is constructed from key passages of a single song. With the careful manipulation of basic elements, samples are given the opportunity to exist in a new light and context. Even obvious and familiar sound sources are reconceived and re-conceptualized. Some samples are staggeringly reshaped (changing times) and reconfigured (fout), while others are deliberately subtle (le bouncepass) and restrained (solace). Eschewing a big drum and filtering ethos, the music instead relies the producer’s ability to identify the most potent of fragments upon which variations/combinations are built and expanded. It is in these variations where lines frequently blur into sudden vocal interjections only to disappear back into grooves undisturbed. Compiled and sequenced to form a much larger corps d‘oeuvre, The Walk On serves as the maiden entry in the Walk On/Off series, instituting the principles and aesthetics from which the series evolves. Compelled by the heartfelt reception of The Walk Off, Hashbrown once again sought the guiding outreach of Jellyfish Recordings creative director Eli Muro. The decision to finally present the completed series (albeit in reverse order and 3 years removed from The Walk Off) came sudden in a revelatory manner, prompting the producer to hastily inquire about an impromptu release. Fortunately Muro was receptive and kindly accommodated the request. Hopeful that the listener will be able to discern and define the commonalities and universal truths contained in the series, Hashbrown concludes, “ I once read somewhere: To find new things, go down an old path”. At the present time, Hashbrown is preparing an upcoming split project with kindred ‘chop up’ spirit Dr. Nacho, as well his own newly born venture as Newton Waves. Stay tuned!

Hashbrown The Walk Off
NEWTON, Surrey. In the precarious township of Newton resides a burgeoning producer in search of a voice and a path of his own. 19 year old Hashbrown, the product of a courier driver father and a social worker mother, finds himself standing at a proverbial fork in the road contemplating which direction to take. On one hand, the paved pathway forged by his influences, contemporaries, and predecessors, while on the other, the long and winding road of the unknown, full of unpredictability and the promise of adventure. Guided and informed by sample-based productions of both golden and post-millennial eras, Hashbrown began his artistic pursuits at the age of 15 upon acquiring a secondhand sampler as a birthday present. He spent the following months rigorously absorbing a variety of approaches/ techniques and eventually applying them to his own lo-fi “trial by error” productions. The results of his initial attempts were later documented on The Walk On – a sprawling collection of photograph-like moments ranging from playful soul re workings to vaulting vocal cut ups; from looping laments of dreams longed to the quietest of storms harnessed and weathered. Simplistic and succinct by nature, the individual pieces act as log entries in an ever moving slideshow spanning 33 tracks. Shared exclusively amongst family and fellow artists, The Walk On proved to be only the prelude to something else. After an extended hiatus (for undisclosed reasons) Hashbrown remerges with The Walk Off , a companion/twin piece to its above mentioned predecessor. Sharing both striking similarities and definitive differences, The Walk Off acts as the spirited conclusion of a 3-year field study. If The Walk On, in all its impulsiveness and naïveté, presented the ideas/hypothesis of a young impressionable mind, then The Walk Off is the reexamination (in support or in refutation) of those very same ideas, yet with an array of life experiences and worldly knowledge as its lens/filter. Cloaked in the guise of a pedestrian-like beat tape/mix, The Walk Off weaves 37 individual vignettes into a narrative detailing the unfolding of a day: from the moments before eyes open upon wake (“before eyes”) to the clamoring clutter of clocked commutes (“more motor”), to the hope fueled diatribes at the dimming of day (“there is a place”) to the solace and serenity of a horizon-less night (“season’s change”). Propelled by both frenetic and solemn pulses, a great sense of urgency permeates the sonic and emotional base of The Walk Off. Drawing from a sonic palette consisting of sounds from the mid 60s-late 70’s (a product of hours mining the dollar basement of Apollo Records), Hashbrown reduces the source material to its barest elements; bringing more out of the sample and thus, allowing possibilities to become self apparent. Once-hidden characteristics are now brought out to the forefront, playing integral roles in the assembly of new grooves and rhythms, all the while preserving the integrity and magic of the source material. With its sparse arrangements and constant shifting, The Walk Off is a fitting soundtrack to any journey (be it by foot or by wheel). Dubbed “music for heavy traffic”, the listener is invited to become an active and vital part in its full presentation. The interaction/interplay between the music and the listener’s physical and emotional environments allows the listener to participate as both the guided as well as the guide, resulting in a much deeper experience. Originally released through the private archival label Outerbound Recordings, a chance meeting with Jellyfish founder and creative director Eli Muro secured an outlet for wider release and broadcast. The newly formed relationship with Jellyfish Recordings marks Hashbrown’s inaugural attempt at sharing his music with the general public. Though his future remains relatively unknown, Hashbrown’s The Walk Off commemorates and honors the journey, the people and the sounds that have lead him to this point. It is now, with conviction and devotion, time for Hashbrown to walk on a road of his own.

A Point in the Unknowable
Extraordinary events since their last project, A Patient Transit, leave the family and staff of ICS/MYSTERYSEVEN in utter disarray and disorientation.  The abrupt and unforeseen passing of their newest and youngest member, J.M. Jr., thrust the crew and project into a seeming sunless limbo.

If A Patient Transit pushed the fledgling team towards reconfiguration and reorientation, the current circumstances sent the remaining members in a silent scramble for purpose, meaning, and motivation.

The inimitable junior member infused the team with an unalloyed innocence of action and a joy of discovery and co-operation - rare in these times.  Yet, as M.L. Navajo intimates, “Contrary to leaving a void in our lives, he has shown us a light to catch hold of and a crystalline purity to attain to.  For we that remain, the urgency of the search is increased tenfold”.

”A Point in the Unknowable is our initial re-search attempt, not at understanding nor comprehending, but at acceptance and surrender,” agent MX7 writes.  ”This work is not our lament, our personal blues;  instead, it is our coming to grips with the larger forces of design secretly at play; an awestruck and humbled ode to His mysterious ways.”     Digital copies available here; includes a digitized album poster designed by MYSTERYFORMS with threadwork collaboration from M.L. Navajo for the Ecclesiastical Society of San Joaquin and the ICS Arts, Crafts and Livelihood Program for Cultivated Living.

MYSTERYSEVEN, in conjunction with ICS, officially inaugurates the public broadcast and civic archiving of their fourth micro-album catalogue release, A Patient Transit.

Since the last information dispatch, ICS issues a tactical maneouver by instating a surprise third element to the new MX7 and M.L. Navajo team : J. Monteiro Jr, lead chair of the ICS Youth Promotion Board.  "This trio combination is designed to incorporate and effectively test the ICS principle of sound introspection within the context of everyday living," ICS’ Noveloso explains,

”Taking MYSTERYSEVEN and ICS research studies out of the relatively controlled academic intellectual environment is a necessary step in its development; entailing an awareness and embracing of  our present living conditions as a more complete field of growth and study.  We feel the MX7-Navajo-Monteiro combination will facilitate this move towards a broader,  more integrated understanding.”

"In many respects this undertaking is a return to Square One," MX7 comments, "It is having to re-evaluate and re-learn all our previous findings in a new context; in a new light.  A Patient Transit is all about that;  this is our initial attempt:  hits, misses, stumbles and hiccups, all inclusive."

addendum : MYSTERYSEVEN has established a cooperative with the ICS Arts Crafts and Livelihood Program for Cultivated Living with the aim of gathering resources and funds to build a self-sufficient and self-sustaining operation.  In addition to establishing several buko juice stands in campus, the program will be setting up all current and subsequent MYSTERYSEVEN releases for digital dissemination online.  Obtain your digital facsimile of A Patient Transit here.  Thank you for your kind support.
